The Hoot Core-Satellite approach
In our view, the old-school, basic Core-Satellite approach is too rigid. This approach most often creates a Core of passively managed index exposures to keep costs low and tacks on a smattering of actively managed Satellite bets to try and add return or manage risk. We reject to the notion that only index solutions can form the foundational Core of a portfolio, dislike the short-term “bet” orientation of most Satellite positions, and think that the planet and orbiting moon imagery results in a disjointed portfolio construction.

Our internally managed Hoot 30 equity strategy serves as a Core equity exposure in most portfolios. This helps keep costs are kept low despite using an actively managed approach.
Investment selection for Satellite holdings are thesis driven with a long-term orientation and designed to complement the portfolio’s Core.
